I absolutely love hush puppies and these Jalapeno Cheddar Hush Puppies are even better. WHY? Because of the cheese!!!

My mom always brings hush puppy mix from Virginia but we haven’t had any in a while. And the last time I tried to use a mix it was a major fail. So, without the old mix to check the ingredient list, I was on the hunt for how to make hush puppy mix.

It’s amazing how many different ways people make hush puppies. This recipe is my second try. Luckily, I didn’t have to put my family and friends through too many test rounds.

Though the first version tasted good it was a bit dry when reheated. Of course, I just couldn’t have that. Not that I have picky friends (my children are way pickier than my friends) but I want people to love what they’re eating.

Hush puppies are a personal favorite of mine. So, imagine how happy I was to read the ingredients on the back of the package and realize I didn’t have to wait for my momma to go to Virginia and pick up a bag of hush puppy mix for me?

Yup, I was excited!!

Don’t have self rising flour or corn meal. No problem. You can make your own self rising by just adding baking powder and salt. Make sure that your baking powder is fresh.

Why Use Self Rising Cornmeal?

I use self rising cornmeal and flour in this recipe to lighten up the hush puppies. I personally, don’t like really dense hush puppies and adding cheese and jalapeños to a recipe that isn’t light would make it even more dense.

What You’ll Need

  • Large bowl
  • spatula
  • Dutch oven or heavy bottom pan
  • thermometer
  • skimmer
  • cooking rack
  • baking pan
  • paper towels

Place the paper towels in the baking pan and the cooling rack on top. This allows the hush puppies to stay crispy but also allows the oil to drain on the paper towels which can be tossed in the garbage when you are done.

  • 1 quart vegetable oil
  • 2 cups self rising cornmeal
  • 3 tablespoons self rising flour
  • 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 jalapeno peppers seeded and finely diced
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded
  • 4 ounces cream cheese soft

  • In a large bowl combine self rising corn meal, self rising flour, baking soda, salt, pepper and onion powder.
  • In a medium bowl, beat an egg. Then stir in cream cheese and milk.
  • Mix liquid ingredients into cornmeal mixture. Than add cheddar and jalapenos.
  • Heat a quart of vegetable oil in a dutch oven (or heavy bottom pan) until oil reached 375 degrees F.
  • Scoop up rounded tablespoons of dough and roll into balls. Fry a couple of balls 2 to 3  minutes or until golden brown. Once golden brown use a metal skimmer to remove and place on a cooling rack. You should some paper towels below to catch the oil that will drain off.

We love hush puppies and fried fish as a meal and it is also great as a snack. To be honest I would actually eat these while watching a movie. Yum!!
