Almost every recipe these days calls for chicken breasts. And that’s all well and good but I’d argue that buying chicken thighs makes more sense. Especially, if you are extremely distracted while cooking or trying to save money (that’s me all day). Using chicken things could be the difference between pass the ketchup and yum that was delicious. So, here are 3 reasons to buy chicken thighs.
3 reasons to buy chicken thighs
Reason # 1 Forgiveness
So, let’s just say chicken thighs are way more forgiving than breasts. The higher fat content in chicken thighs allows the meat to stay moist. If you are an inexperienced cook, a busy cook, a distracted cook, actually if you are any kind of cook you want to use chicken thighs. If you are a great cook that cooks for the whole week in one day, you want to use chicken thighs. It can stand up to reheating (stove top or microwave) without losing flavor or drying out.
The fat in the chicken allows it to remain moist even if it might be overcooked a bit. For instance, I’m known for stepping away from the stove while cooking. With a dish like curry chicken I add a little additional stock, turn the heat down to low and handle whatever mommy craziness awaits.
Reason # 2 Yummy, yum, yum yum
The higher fat content in chicken thighs allows for a more flavorful and juicy experience. Fat just absorbs seasoning better. It also coats the pallet as it breaks down making flavors more intense. In a dish where it simmers in a delicious sauce, it’s perfect.
Reason # 3 Show Me the Money
If you have a large family or are looking to save money, chicken thighs are less expensive than chicken breast. It is almost always a better buy. In our supermarket this week boneless skinless chicken breasts were $3.53 and boneless skinless thighs were $2.21. When on sale, you can sometimes purchase chicken thighs for almost half the price of chicken breasts.
