This quick and easy Homemade Tomato Basil Pasta Sauce is filled with garlic and fresh basil for a sauce with layers of flavor.
Jarred pasta sauce is easy but homemade pasta sauce tastes so much better. You’d be surprised at how quick it is to make your own flavorful pasta sauce. Jars of store bought pasta can cost up to $5 a jar. And let’s be honest. Some of those sauces are just okay. But this Homemade Tomato Basil Pasta Sauce recipe … you’ll love it.
Best part of making your own pasta sauce is that you can cut out all of the extra junk (like artificial colors and food additives)that comes in that jar and add all the garlic, onion or basil you want. We make a big pot of sauce and freeze the extra for up to 3 months. We freeze about 2 cups of sauce in freezer bags. We label with bags with the type of sauce and the date it was made. Freeze flat to save space and make it easy to defrost. Then pull it out when needed.
This sauce is everything you love about a homemade pasta sauce. Big chunks of garlic and tomatoes. It’s the perfect sauce for us and it utilizing the herbs and vegetables from our garden. In about 15 minutes, you’ll have a sauce that’s richer than any jarred sauce.
Homemade Tomato Basil Pasta Sauce
Makes about 8 Cups
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 2 medium onions, chopped
- 6 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 can (28 ounce) crushed tomato
- 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes or 12 whole tomatoes
- 1/2 cup fresh basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 2 bay leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- salt and pepper to taste
Tools: large stainless stockpot, wooden spoon
In a large stock pot, heat the olive oil in a medium size pot over medium heat.
Add onions and saute until soft, about 5 minutes. Then add garlic.
Next add tomatoes, oregano, basil, bay leaves, salt, pepper and sugar.
Bring to a boil and immediately reduce to a simmer.
Simmer for 10-15 minutes to let flavors meld.
Serve over pasta of choice.
