Homemade Enchilada Sauce

  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/4 cup chili powder Mexican chili powder
  • 8 ounces tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper


  • Add oil to a large pan over medium high heat. Then gently stir in flour and chili powder. Once combined, reduce heat to medium and continue you stirring. Cook until lightly browned.
  • Gently stir in tomato sauce, water cumin. garlic, onion and salt into the chili mixture. Continue to stir until smooth and cook for an additional 10 minutes and slightly thick. Remove from heat.
